Course Description:
For the French art historian and critic Louis Gonse, 鈥淢anet [was] a point of departure, the symptomatic precursor of a revolution鈥. For Picasso, 鈥淐茅zanne was like the father of us all鈥. But Manet himself stated that he had 鈥渘o intention of overthrowing old methods of painting, or creating new ones鈥, and C茅zanne鈥檚 later period as a recluse in Provence removed him from direct engagement with the younger generation.
This course explores the almost mythic quality with which artists and critics viewed Manet and C茅zanne. It teases out points of continuity and innovation, addressing central topics of landscape, still life, materiality and representation, as well as less obvious connections, for example the musical soir茅es of the society Le Petit Bayreuth. The course ends with an examination of the legacies of both Manet and C茅zanne, paying critical attention to Clement Greenberg鈥檚 famous description of C茅zanne as 鈥渢he gateway to contemporary painting鈥.
Lecturer's Biography
Dr Charlotte de Mille curates the 91自拍 Gallery鈥檚 music programme. With the Gallery she co-authored Animating Art History, a joint initiative with Central St. Martin鈥檚 and the University for the Creative Arts, which was long-listed for a Clore Award in Museum Learning. She was Visiting Scholar at Lingnan University, Hong Kong in 2018, and Mid-Career Fellow at the Paul Mellon Centre for British Art 2019-20. She is Associate Lecturer at the 91自拍 teaching the MA Music and the Visual Arts. She edited听Music and Modernism听(2011) and is co-editor of听The Bloomsbury Handbook to Music and Art听(2023). Her book听Bergson in Britain: Modern Art and Philosophy听was published by EUP in the autumn of 2023. She is co-director of the project听Intersections of Music and Art in Europe 1950-2000,听with the Fondazione Cini, Venice.
