Ann Coxon is an internationally renowned curator, writer and researcher with a specialist interest in textile practices and tacit knowledge within modern and contemporary art. For over 20 years she was a curator at Tate Modern where she organised two full collection rehangs and curated over 40 collection displays as well as a number of significant temporary exhibitions. Most notably, she co-curated the landmark exhibitions Magdalena Abakanowicz: Every Tangle of Thread and Rope, 2022; Dorothea Tanning, 2019; and Anni Albers, 2018. Ann has worked with many artists including Robert Frank, Phyllida Barlow, Martin Creed, Michael Rakowitz, Maurizio Cattelan, Magdalena Abakanowicz, Mona Hatoum, Dominique Gonzales-Foerster and Mire Lee.
Ann was educated at state school and began study at the University of Cambridge before changing track to continue her Fine Art practice, first at the University of Derby (Foundation course in Art and Design), then at the University of Leeds where she studied with Professor Griselda Pollock and won the Alan Mohun memorial prize for her disseration on feminism and spatial fear. She completed the MA in Curating Contemporary Art at the Royal College of Art in 2000 and shortly after began working as both a freelance curator and as Campaigns Officer and then Assistant Curator at Tate Modern. Ann has experience of working at Derby Museum and Art Gallery, Women’s Art Magazine (MAKE), Leeds Metropolitan University Gallery, The University of Cambridge, Kettle’s Yard, White Cube, The Hayward Gallery and for British Council at the Venice Biennale. She has curated exhibitions at Arnolfini, Bristol and the Jim Thompson Museum, Bangkok.
Ann is currently completing a PhD thesis on New Tapestry in Europe 1962-1970, funded by the AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Partnership scheme with Tate and University College London, supervised by Professor Briony Fer. She has published many catalogue essays and articles as well as two books: Motherhood, Tate Publishing, 2023 and Louise Bourgeois, Tate Publishing, 2010. She has taught at BA and MA level at UCL and for many years ran the virtual display project for the Royal College of Art and then for the 91自拍 (2023). Ann has presented papers at the AAH Conference, the University of Cambridge (keynote paper) and many museums and galleries internationally. She has also served as a jury member for the International Triennial of Textile, 艁贸d藕 and for the ANTEPRIMA x CHAT Contemporary Textile Art Prize, Hong Kong.
